2023/24 NHL season: Top 10 goaltenders

The NHL is filled with players who show amazing levels of skill, speed and physicality, however, the elite talent among goaltenders is often overlooked.

There are many amazing goalies in the NHL and in this article we will be showcasing the top ten heading into this 2023-24 season.

Igor Shesterkin, New York Rangers (+600 to win Vezina Trophy)

First on the list is Igor Shesterkin for the New York Rangers. The 27-year-old has 99 wins in just 158 games since arriving from Russia, and he is something to watch.

Shesterkin had what some might say as an off year last season, but his career numbers include a 2.37 goals against average, with a .924 save percentage and 11 shutouts. He also has a Vezina Trophy in just four NHL seasons.

He has been one of the main reasons the Rangers have been so dominant the past few seasons, and he is only getting better.

Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay Lightning (+1500)

Next is Andrei Vasilevskiy for the Tampa Bay Lighting. One of the main contributing factors of the two Stanley Cups won by the Lightning has been Vasilevskiy being a brick wall.

While his career regular season stats are very good with a 2.52 goals against average and .919 save percentage, they are even better in the playoffs as he sports a 2.37 goals against average and .921 save percentage.

This tall goaltender moves like the wind and has been dominating this league for many years now.

Ilya Sorokin, New York Islanders (+600)

Ilya Sorokin is next on this list as the third Russian and third Eastern Conference goaltender. This New York Islanders star is heading into just his fourth year, but in limited action it is clear he is the real deal.

His totals to date are highly impressive with a 2.33 goals against average and .924 save percentage, but his 18 shutouts in just 133 starts is an incredible result.

If he could gather high amounts of wins and some playoff success, Sorkin could easily be looked at as the best in the business.

Connor Hellebyuck, Winnipeg Jets (+600)

Next is Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck. He has been one of the league’s best goalies for a long time, and last year he continued to show it.

He posted his best goals against average in five seasons, and best save percentage in three seasons. His size and positioning bring a challenge to NHL shooters on a nightly basis.

After winning the Vezina in the 2019-20 season, Hellebuyck has proven he is still worthy of being the best goaltender in the NHL.

Jusse Saros, Nashville Predators (+600)

Closing out the top five is Nashville Predators goaltender Jusse Saros. What a trooper Saros has been.

The 28-year-old has been with the Predators for eight seasons, and has been the starter for roughly four of them. However, he has only seen action in 17 playoff games.

While the team's success hasn’t been there, his play in net has been excellent. He is sporting a career 2.58 goals against average and a .919 save percentage in 286 games.

He is short for a goalie at 5’11, but his vision and agility make him one of the NHL’s best goalies.

Linus Ullmark, Boston Bruins (+2000)

Coming in next on this list is the reigning Vezina Trophy winner in Linus Ullmark. The 30-year-old heads into his third season with the Boston Bruins, and he will be looking to show everyone that last season was not a fluke.

He had the all-time sixth-best save percentage in a single season (.938), along with the best goals against average since 2018-19 (1.89).

If Ullmark can play anywhere near this top level, he will be in the conversation for the NHL’s best goaltender for years to come.

Jake Oettinger, Dallas Stars (+1300)

One of the NHL’s best young goaltenders in Jake Oettinger finds himself on this list. This 24-year-old Dallas Stars goaltender is heading into his third season as a starter, and he took major leaps last year.

He finished the season with a large workload, and earned a career high in wins, shutouts, goals against average, and save percentage.

The former first round pick from Boston University is finding his stride quickly, so keep an eye on him as an emerging goaltender in this league.

Thatcher Demko, Vancouver Canucks (+2500)

Another young and rising goaltender is Thatcher Demko for the Vancouver Canucks. This highly touted goaltender is beginning to make his mark in the league and, while he hasn’t consistently put up numbers yet, he has a lot to offer.

Demko has shown many flashes of brilliance, but on a weak team it can be tough to produce strong results. Demko has a large frame with great mobility that makes him hard to beat. He will only get better as the team in front of him also improves.

Filip Gustavsson, Minnesota Wild (+2000)

Next up is Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson. It took the 2016, 2nd round pick a while to get his NHL career going, but after getting traded from Ottawa to Minnesota, he finally found his groove.

He posted incredible stats of a .931 save percentage and a 2.10 goals against average in 39 games last year, and looks like he may be ready for a larger role.

He was just as good in the playoffs, and will be pushing veteran Marc-Andre Fleury for the starting position in Minnesota.

Jeremy Swayman, Boston Bruins (+2500)

To close out the list is another 1B in Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins.

Swayman helped starter Linus Ullmark by his exceptional play as a backup, which led the two earning the Jennings Trophy for allowing the fewest goals in the NHL.

He was arguably the league’s best backup, and would likely be a starter almost anywhere else.

He has got decent size with great attributes and has played in 37+ games in the last two seasons, so he is getting his reps and only getting better.
