Hockey fans are in for a treat on Saturday with 24 teams in action in some phenomenal matchups, including the Edmonton Oilers vs. Toronto Maple Leafs.
Both Edmonton and Toronto are playing great hockey right now and the star power and recent form of these teams is reason enough to tune in.
Although both teams enter this game rolling, what looks to give the Maple Leafs the edge in this one is home-ice advantage and an extra day’s rest.
The Maple Leafs have won four out of their last five games and are 7-3 at home this season. They are also 7-3 against the spread at home this year. Although this is a money line pick, the record against the spread reinforces their performances in the friendly confines.
The Maple Leafs also have been home for two days since their last contest on Wednesday. That factor should also bode well for them considering the Oilers had one day off and had lengthy travel for this game.
Toronto has not had Auston Matthews for five games, but that has not kept them from winning four of those games. Those wins were against good teams, no less and the Leafs are in a good spot to keep it rolling.
Regardless of the game script, Leon Draisaitl is all but a formality to be a factor. He leads the Oilers in goals, points, and plus-minus. He will be leaned on heavily in this game. That will be nothing new for him as Draisaitl also logs the most ice time per game on average of any forward on Edmonton.
In a game with a ton of talent on both sides, there should be no passing up opportunities to get the puck on net and generate a scoring chance. That is even more true for Draisaitl and his teammates in a close or trailing game script.
As mentioned, even if the Oilers were to be in leading position, there is a good chance Draisaitl helped get them the lead in the first place. Look for him to pepper the goalie with shots and maybe even score a point or two.
In the current five-game absence of Matthews, which appears set to reach at least reach six games, William Nylander has been a key Leafs player that has stepped up.
He didn’t have to markedly improve though as he was already a stellar, productive player, but in the last five games, Nylander has tallied three goals and seven points. He has done it against solid teams too considering opponents during that stretch included Boston, Detroit, and Washington.
Nylander has also logged an average of over 20 minutes of ice time per game during this five-game stretch. That is up from his season average of ice time this season of 18:48.
This is a dangerous player who is coming through for his team which is also rolling right now. In a fast-paced game which is loaded with talent, Nylander stands out and will be leaned on to continue to produce.
