The Calgary Flames and the Tampa Bay Lightning duel on Thursday, and we've got picks and predictions for the action.
Both the Calgary Flames and Tampa Bay Lightning have been in hockey world headlines lately, but for different reasons.
The Lightning are in the Eastern Conference playoff picture and may be active in trades ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.
While the Lightning are looking to add, the Flames have been selling assets ahead of the deadline. The rest of the Flames’ season looks a bit more bleak now, but they will not go down without a fight.
The Flames have played well lately, but their roster just took another hit with potentially more to come.
After dealing Elias Lindholm last month, in the past week, Calgary has also dealt defensemen Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin. This team has a new, lesser experienced, and all due respect, less talented roster than they did a week ago. It will take time for this team to get in a groove with its new every day lineup.
The Lightning are in a playoff spot but not comfortably. But if there is any team in the NHL that knows how to play this time of year, it’s Jon Cooper’s Lightning.
They are 3-1-1 in their last 5 games and have just 19 games remaining. They will be playing with added urgency to continue to keep pace while the Flames adjust to their new lineup. Tampa usually turns it on when it matters most and tonight should be another example.
In addition to trying to lead the Lightning to the playoffs, Nikita Kucherov is in an all-out battle for the Hart Trophy among other individual awards.
While that is not near as important as the team success, it illustrates the kind of season he has had. Kucherov’s 105 points is 2nd in the NHL and he has done so in just 62 games. This guy has been a man possessed this season with no signs of slowing down.
During the Tampa’s current 3-1-1 run, Kucherov has tallied 2 goals and 10 points. To no surprise, he is on the team’s top line along with Brayden Point and Brandon Hagel, as well as the top power play with Point, Anthony Cirelli, Victor Hedman, and Steven Stamkos.
The Lightning rank 7th in the NHL in goals scored per game and have the league’s best power play. The raw talent of Kucherov combined with the situation he is in on a good team facing the mid-tier team all makes for a good matchup.
Considering how good Kucherov has been this year, other players have flown under the radar.
Brayden Point is one such player. Point has been a stalwart on this Lightning team through its prime successful seasons. He also has been over a point per game player multiple times in his career including this season thus far. Point’s 65 points in 63 games is 2nd on the Lightning, as are his 32 goals.
As previously mentioned, Point is on the top line and top power play with very impressive veteran players. Every time he touches the ice, Point is skating with superstar talent wearing the same sweater.
For any offense the Lightning muster up, there is a good chance it goes through Point and Kucherov’s line. Point enters this game with goals in two straight and in 7 of his last 9. This could be another solid night of production for Point.
