The Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Angels continue their three-game set tonight with a 9:38 PM ET first pitch in California.
Toronto won the series opener behind an excellent outing from Bowden Francis and will look to make it 2 wins in a row tonight.
The probable pitchers are Kevin Gausman for the Jays and Carson Fulmer for the Angels, so let’s preview this American League matchup and see our expert’s best bets.
The Angels have been a mess in 2024, with Mike Trout suffering another an injury, Anthony Rendon failing to live up to his $245 million contract price tag, and the young lineup looking severely underprepared.
Los Angeles managed just two hits in the series opener as starter Bowden Francis and the Jays bullpen had the Angels locked down from the first pitch to the last. It’s only going to get more difficult tonight since they have to face Kevin Gausman, the ace of Toronto's staff.
Gausman’s numbers won’t jump off the page since he’s been very inconsistent all year, but he’s coming off a phenomenal start against the Orioles.
He went 8 innings and surrendered just two runs and three hits against a dangerous Baltimore lineup. Gausman managed just two strikeouts in eight innings which is back-to-back outings of just two punchouts, but if he continues to get weak contact, his limited strikeout numbers are fine.
The Los Angeles starting rotation has been one of the team's many weaknesses. Patrick Sandoval was supposed to be the ace in the pack, but an elbow injury has kept him off the mound since the middle of June.
That has led to Tyler Anderson becoming the leader of a very young staff. Plus, tonight's starter Carson Fulmer was recently moved into the rotation from the bullpen after posting a 3.83 ERA in relief.
In 5 starts, Fulmer has a 3.60 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and has limited hitters to a .189 batting average. Walks have been a slight problem and that has led to him completing five innings in just two of his five starts.
This game should be close for the first half, but the Blue Jays have the stronger bullpen which should earn them back-to-back wins in this series.
It might be worth looking at the under as well as taking the Blue Jays to win. Gausman just had one of the best outings of his entire season and Fulmer has proved to be a reliable arm in his limited opportunities as a starter.
Also, Gausman has been much better on the road than at home.
In his home stadium, Gausman is 4-5 with a 5.91 ERA and has allowed an .801 OPS. But on the road, Gausman’s ERA drops to 2.74 and he’s limited hitters to a .654 OPS.
Those dramatic home and away splits benefit the under in this matchup since this series is taking place in Southern California.
Fulmer has been more than just a serviceable arm in the rotation in the last month. Since entering the rotation, he’s held hitters to batting average below .200 with a strikeout rate above 20 percent.
Fulmer is continuing to get stretched out each outing and should be able to throw 80 to 100 pitches in tonight’s game. The reliever-turned-starter also has another advantage - the Blue Jays lineup has barely seen him in their careers. Only George Springer has faced Fulmer, and he’s 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
Runs won’t be coming in bunches with Gausman and Fulmer on the mound, so take the under in the second game of the series.
