The Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays will continue a three-game series when they meet again at the Rogers Centre in Toronto on Tuesday night.
Cincinnati took the opener 6-3 on Monday, ending a three-game losing streak. The Blue Jays have dropped three of their last four.
Let’s take a look at the odds and best bets to make for Tuesday’s contest.
Although Cincinnati got the job done on Monday, it’s still hard to have much confidence in this ballclub at the moment. After all, saying the Reds’ three-game skid was alarming would be a gross understatement.
It wasn't just the fact they were swept by Kansas City; they lost by margins of 7-1, 13-1 and 8-1.
Cincinnati is 61-64 entering tonight's matchup and they're presumably out of the National League Wild Card race, 5.5 games back of the Atlanta Braves for the third spot.
Every win is essential, but the visitors may not get one on Tuesday. Carson Spiers is taking the mound on Tuesday, and he is 4-4 with a 4.55 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. Through three August starts, the right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA.
The Blue Jays’ offense – led by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and Daulton Varsho – should be able to take advantage. Guerrero has homered three times in the last six games.
Toronto’s bats have not been entirely on fire of late, but they should do enough to prevail tonight.
Any amount of run support could be enough for Toronto starter Jose Berrios because the veteran right-hander is coming off two consecutive dominant performances.
On August 9, he limited the Oakland Athletics to one run on six hits in 7.0 innings while striking out eight batters and walking one. Berrios’ line last Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels was similar: 7.0 innings, one run allowed on two hits and one walk in addition to five strikeouts.
The Blue Jays won those two games by a combined score of 12-3.
It should also be pointed out that Berrios is sporting a 2.83 ERA at home in 2024 compared to a 4.91 mark on the road. The friendly confines of the Rogers Centre should be another recipe for success against a Cincinnati squad that is averaging barely more than two runs per game over its last four.
As for Spiers, he has not been great in recent weeks but is backed by a bullpen that ranks seventh in ERA across all of Major League Baseball. Spiers will be on a short leash in this one before the ‘pen handles the latter stages of the game.
The under looks like the way to play Tuesday’s contest.
