Esports: LCK Summer 2022 Friday match previews

Week 4 of the LCK Summer Split 2022 is in full swing and we are being treated to two huge matches on gameday three which could reshape the standings.

The first game of the day is a genuine box office encounter and the match we have been patiently waiting for all split long.

OddsGen.G -138, T1 +100

Gen.G and T1 occupy the top two spots in the Summer Split and victory for either will be hugely significant.

Gen.G have made a case for being the best team in the world this split and head into this match with a flawless 6-0 record. They have been infallible on the Rift and have dropped just one game in the entire split thus far, with that coming against another powerhouse in DAMWON Gaming.

It was business as usual for the Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon-led squad last week, maintaining their unbeaten record with a 2-0 sweep of Freecs. It was a pair of dominant games, taking the sole Baron in both games after establishing an early lead.

Midlaner Chovy has been the driving force behind Gen.G’s success and he jointly leads the MVP race with four. Jungler Han "Peanut" Wang-ho has been another star performer and has three MVP titles to his name.

The weaknesses of this Gen.G side are yet to be discovered and given how dominant they have been throughout the Summer Split, it is no surprise to see Gen.G as the favourites to take this match.

That being said, if there is one team who could exploit any weaknesses in this seemingly impenetrable Gen.G side, it will be T1.

Winner of the Spring Split and runner-up at the Mid-Season Invitational, T1 sit at 5-1 in the standings and a victory would see them usurp Gen.G at the top of the table due to the head to head record.

T1 have been Gen.G's kryptonite in 2022 and did the 2-0 double over their rivals in the Spring Split. They made it three wins over Gen.G by winning the Grand Final 3-1 and given those facts, you would be forgiven in thinking that T1 should be the favourites.

They sit at 5-1, but barring a shock 1-2 defeat to Freecs two weeks ago, T1 have looked just as strong as Gen.G this split.

They continued in good form with a 2-0 victory over DRX last week and there is going to be very little to split these sides in what should be an explosive match-up.

KT Rolster vs Kwandong Freecs

OddsKwangdong Freecs +110, KT Rolster -150

Although it is not a top of the table clash, this game between KT Rolster vs Freecs is arguably more significant. Both sides enter the week with a 3-4 record and whoever comes out on top will move into the final play-off position outright.

Inconsistency has plagued KT Rolster's Split thus far and their performance overall has to go down as disappointing. They did start off with tough matches against Gen.G and T1, but, after taking their first win against Brion, subsequent defeats to SANDBOX and DAMWON left them reeling in a terrible position.

They have attempted to right the ship with two recent wins against Hanwha Life and Nongshim RedForce, but they were entitled to win those and victory against Freecs is essential in proving that they are play-off material.

They are facing Freecs at the perfect time on paper, with Freecs losing four of their last five matches. The sole victory came in astonishing fashion against T1, but their most recent match, a 2-0 defeat to Gen.G, brought them back down to earth with a thud.

Forgetting that victory over T1, their only successes this split have come against Brion and Hanwha Life, who have endured their own struggles towards the bottom of the standings.

The flawless victory over Brion should have at least given them some confidence and momentum, but whether they can build on that is a big question mark.

On paper, there is little to split these sides and the odds suggest that too. KT Rolster are the form side overall and the statistics suggest they have the stronger line-up, but Freecs have a habit of upsetting their rivals and it will be fascinating to see how this game plays out.
