NRL: Gilbert joins the Dolphins

The Dolphins have added to their roster for their inaugural 2023 NRL campaign by snapping up Tom Gilbert from the North Queensland Cowboys.

North Queensland Cowboys are priced at 5/4 to finish in the top eight of the NRL this season and Gilbert will now be looking to go out on a high before joining Wayne Bennett’s side.

Tough decision

Gilbert is originally from Brisbane and the chance to return home was a key factor in his decision.

He starred for the Norths Devils as a teenager in the Queensland Cup and is excited about the opportunity to play for the Dolphins. The 21-year-old has spoken of his love for the Cowboys, but ultimately family comes first for him.

"This is the hardest decision I've had to make in my life, which is why it has taken me this long," Gilbert told reporters "I've been sitting on this for about four months, but it's time for me to go home and be with my family, they need me.

"It means I'm leaving a club that I love, but supporting my family will always come first."

Playmaker needed

Gilbert joins fellow forwards Felise Kaufusi, Ray Stone, Jesse and Kenny Bromwich at the Dolphins and now Bennett needs to step up his attempts to strength the halves.

Melbourne Storm ace Cameron Munster remains a top target, while Bennett has also confirmed he is keen on former Brisbane Broncos five-eighth Anthony Milford.

Kalyn Ponga, Reed Mahoney, Brandon Smith, Harry Grant and Jahrome Hughes have so far turned down the Dolphins.
