MLB: Five teams with work to do ahead of 2023

We look at five teams in Major League Baseball that need to improve their roster prior to the start of the 2023 season.

Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox needed to sign a big name this winter and they achieved that when they obtained free agent Andrew Benintendi after they had lost Jose Abreu.

The signing of Benintendi helps ease the loss of Abreu offensively but you still feel they require an extra strong bat to help bolster the top of their order.

The White Sox need to improve on last season’s 81-81 record. With the Guardians setting the marker in the American League Central Division by securing the crown last year, the White Sox need to improve if they are to reach the playoffs.

They have advanced their rotation by signing Mike Clevinger, but you feel he would need some help to push the White Sox into Division winners again.

The Chicago White Sox are +135 Outright to win the American League Central Division in 2023.

Milwaukee Brewers

The way the Brewers’ 2022 season tailed off after trading Josh Hader was alarming. Devin Williams moved into the closer role left by Hader and did pretty well, but Hader was the best closer in baseball, so he had big shoes to fill.

The Brewers do have a pretty good rotation in Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff, Eric Lauer and Freddy Peralta, but you feel they need a bullpen requirement to help the four quality pitchers.

The additions of William Contreras and Jesse Winker should help a line-up that was slightly above league average in 2022, but have the Brewers done enough this winter to challenge the St Louis Cardinals for the National League Central Division?

Milwaukee are +145 to win the NL Central Division outright.

Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays have traded away Teoscar Hernandez and Lourdes Gurriel Jr this offseason, but have acquired promising outfielder Daulton Varsho.

They exchanged veteran pitchers by losing Ross Stripling but signing Chris Bassitt. Toronto won 92 games last season but lost out to the Seattle Mariners in the American League Wild Card series.

The Blue Jays need a bit more rotation depth if they are to usurp the New York Yankees and win the American League.

MLB: Rafael Devers sticking with the Boston Red Sox

The Blue Jays are unsure when Hyun Jin Ryu will be able to return from left elbow surgery, but Bassitt, Alek Manoah and Kevin Gausman will be a decent 1-2-3.

The Toronto Blue Jays are +175 to win the American League East Division outright.

Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are still rebuilding and they surprised everyone by performing so well in the 2022 season, winning 83 games and finishing ahead of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East.

They flirted with the playoffs last season which was way ahead of schedule. The Orioles have a very promising young roster and are ready to use all their stars for the whole of 2023 and not just for half a season.

Everyone is hoping to see Adley Rutschmann and Gunnar Henderson for the Orioles, but you still feel that Baltimore need a veteran pitcher if they are to compete for a Wild Card position alongside the Toronto Blue Jays.

While the Tampa Bay Rays may have run their current race, it’s expected that the Orioles will be a side that will annoy the elite teams in the Division and be a nuisance to everyone.

The Orioles are +2500 to win the AL East Division outright.

San Francisco Giants

The Giants have had a shocker of a winter in terms of signings. However, they did their due diligence on Carlos Correa and opted out of that deal when injury concerns were brought to the fore. As it happens, the Mets were in the process of restructuring their deal before the Correa party moved back to Minnesota.

However, are the Giants in a worse position than last season? Yes. They have stood and watched while the San Diego Padres have spent big on their already impressive roster and, while the Dodgers haven’t joined in the multi-million dollar deals, they already have an impressive team to put on the field.

The Giants have added outfielder Michael Conforto, who hasn’t played at all since 2021, plus Stripling and Sean Manaea. The Giants have lost Carlos Rodon, Tommy La Stella, Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt, so they will struggle to repeat 81 wins in 2023.

The Giants are +1200 to win the NL West outright in 2023.
