Cheltenham - Racing: Elliott excited by Galvin form

Trainer Gordon Elliott is hoping Galvin can cap a fine season with another top-level success in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup on the final day of the Festival on Friday.

The eight-year-old has enjoyed a stellar campaign with two successes and a second so far, and lowered the colours of A Plus Tard when a narrow winner of the Savills Chase at Leopardstown over the Christmas period.

While he has not been seen since, Galvin has strong course form from being a previous Festival winner, having landed the National Hunt Chase last year, as well as finishing second at the 2020 meeting - and he is 10/3 to win the Gold Cup on Friday.

Top-class field ready to go

Galvin is set to face off once again against A Plus Tard, who alongside last year's winner Minella Indo will represent trainer Henry de Bromhead, as well as the Dan Skelton-trained Protektorat.

Also among the field of 11 is two-time Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo, King George VI Chase winner Tornado Flyer, the Venetia Williams-trained Royale Pagaille and Cotswold Chase hero Chantry House.

Galvin bids to give the trainer a second Gold Cup success, with Elliott having won the prestigious race with Don Cossack in 2016.

Elliott said: "He's just improved and improved throughout the season, it's been unbelievable really."

Galvin coming up with answers

"The more questions we keep asking him, the more answers he keeps coming up with. He likes his races being spaced out and he's had a lovely campaign."

He added: "He seems to love Cheltenham too, as you saw in last year's National Hunt Chase, and it's possible there is actually more improvement to come from him.

"He's been working very well and I couldn't be any happier with him going into the race. I'm really looking forward to it."
