Star strikers need to find form

Canada strikers Cyle Larin and Jonathan David finished first and second respectively in the goalscoring charts in 2022 World Cup Qualifying, but David only has two league goals this season while Larin has none.

If this Canada team wants to get past a talented Jamaica side, they need their goalscorers to, well, score goals.

Canada certainly has enough creativity in the squad to give David and Larin opportunities.

Alphonso Davies has three assists in 11 Bundesliga matches this season, and since he plays further up the pitch for Canada, he could be in an even better position to create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

Ismael Kone, a 21-year-old attacking midfielder for Watford FC in the English Championship, had four assists for MLS side CF Montreal in 2022 before moving overseas. He should aim to return to that level over the two Nations League games.

Stephen Eustaquio has also been in good form this season, scoring three goals from 15 matches in central midfield for FC Porto. He had five assists in the Portuguese league last season and will need his teammates to finish the chances he creates in the two legs against Jamaica.

Strong defence needed against tough Jamaica

Going against a potential Jamaica front three of Leon Bailey, Michail Antonio, and Demarai Gray means that Canada interim head coach Mauro Biello needs his defenders to be on their game from the start of the first leg to the end of the second.

The Canadian defence has not been at its best lately. In 2023, they have let in four goals against Japan, two goals to Cuba, two goals to Guadeloupe, and two goals to the United States.

In the 2022 World Cup, Canada conceded seven goals in three group stage matches in a challenging group with Belgium, Croatia, and Morocco.

With Kamal Miller, Alistair Johnston, Richie Laryea, and Steven Vitoria, Canada has a good but not great back line compared to the rest of CONCACAF. Biello needs to prove here that he can coach a defence as well as Herdman did when helping Canada qualify for the 2022 World Cup with relative ease.

Perhaps Biello will move Davies to left back to use his recovery pace in defence and get on the ball earlier in possessions than he would in attack.
