As the group stage for women's basketball in the Olympics comes to a close this weekend, Team Canada and Team Nigeria are fighting for a spot in the last eight. The two countries match up in a Group B contest on Sunday.
Canada (0-2), which finished fourth in the most recent FIBA Women's World Cup in 2022, has lost to Group B leader France, 75-54, and Australia, 70-65.
Nigeria opened the tournament with its first win at the Olympics in 20 years, 75-62 over Australia, before succumbing to France by the same 75-54 score as Canada.
Nigeria has all of the momentum going into this closing group stage matchup. The team is looking to reach the knockout stage for the first time in the country's history.
Led by Ezinne Kalu, who is averaging 18.5 points through two games, Nigeria boasts several players who can reach double figures.
Canada, meanwhile, has been one of the tournament's biggest disappointments. However, a win over Nigeria could still get the Canadians into the knockout round.
Bridget Carleton (13.5 ppg), Kia Nurse (11.5 ppg) and Shay Colley (10 ppg) are the only players averaging in double figures through the first two contests, so more Team Canada players will need to step up in this game.
Look for Canada to get the win in a tight closing contest, but for Nigeria to cover the 6.5-point spread.
Neither country is lighting up the scoreboard. Nigeria is averaging 64.5 points a contest and Canada is averaging just 59.5.
Those numbers should increase slightly since France's defense is not part of the equation this go-around.
The teams should come close, but look for the total to stay under 133.5 points Sunday.
Carleton had just eight points in Team Canada's opening-game loss to France, but bounced back with 19 points in the tight defeat to Australia.
Her teammates will need her to stay within that scoring range again to post a win on Sunday and for her to beat her number in the player props.
Kalu is the only Nigerian player to score in double figures in both Olympic contests. She went 4-for-6 from beyond the 3-point line and had 19 points against Australia.
France limited her to 33% (4-for-12) shooting from the field, but she went 9-for-11 from the free throw line to lead Nigeria with 18 points in a losing effort.
Look for Kalu to again lead Nigeria in scoring.
